Star Trek Reboot Delivers On Fun

I tend to shy away from Reboots of series, as they tend to be inferior copies of the original series, in this case however rather than just copying the material that was there already, the movie found a way to separate itself and do it's own thing, while still remaining true to the characters and feel of the original. This reboot is a prequel to the original Star Trek series, that takes place in a new alternate reality that exists due to some time traveling from the future of the original Star Trek series. This allows for new story lines with the same characters, and for events to be interpreted in a new and interesting way.
This movie is focused from beginning to end, constantly keeping up a fast pace, full of humor action and homage to the original series. From the emotional opening scene where the birth of this universe's kirk during escape from an assault on the star ship kelvin is shown. this movie delivers excitement, that sticks around throughout the film without letting up. Whether it is the introduction of a new character, an exciting action scene, humorous dialogue, this movie is constantly delivering fun in some way or another.
With the amount of comedy in the script, if this movie had not been handled while by the director it could have come off as just plain silly. However the cast gives a strong performance throughout the film, and the direction is top notch. Allowing the humor to flow naturally, and never feel out of place in the serious setting. Keeping the movie light and fun without letting it slip into being overly silly or cheesy.
One of the biggest changes from the original series to this reboot, is the budget, while the original series was rather cheaply made, with sets being partially constructed from cardboard, and cheesy unrealistic effects, this movie had a large budget, and it shows. The effects are elaborate, the sets are beautiful, and right from the opening scene, it is clear that they have gone away from the star trek standard of just changing a few facial features and calling it an alien as we are treated to a look at an elaborate alien creature. This update is welcome, and helps to add diversity to the wide universe created by the original show, that was constrained by it's small budget.
This movie is just plain fun, it doesn't have anything profound to say, or any real serious message to deliver, instead it just focuses on delivering a fun experience from beginning to end. This film really works as a Star Trek film in the way it portrays the characters. These are clearly the same characters from the original show, with the same personalities, some recognizable quirks in the way they talk or lines they say, it all feels familiar, while still distinguishing itself from the original. The cast did an excellent job of portraying the essence of the characters with out copying the performances of the actors that came before them.
I highly recommend this film to anyone who likes to watch films purely for enjoyment. This film is a blast, highly entertaining and definitely worth a watch or twelve. I give this film 5 out of 5.

Never a huge fan of the original Star Trek I found this film to be wonderful. It was exciting, funny and perfectly paced, your review was spot on. The film stands alone and is enjoyable whether you are a fan or not. I look forward to the sequals

I'm a big fan of the Original Series, and I enjoyed this movie very much, as well. I agree with you about the humor and how it flows naturally. This is one of the things the original cast did so well. I'm looking forward to more films with the new cast.
